Community Payback is a tough punishment for offenders and gets them to make reparation for their crimes. The introduction of high-vis orange jackets ensures that the public can see that justice is being done and that offenders are making amends for their crimes in the community.
Community Payback also gives the public a say in what criminals must actually do to serve their punishment – they can nominate here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CrimeJusticeAndTheLaw/PrisonAndProbation/DG_182080 During the period July- September 2010 over 3,000 Community Payback work projects were nominated by members of the public.
Last year over 67,700 offenders completed Community Payback and over 8.9 million hours of work was undertaken which was used to benefit the community. Approximately 60,000 offenders on community payback are currently being supervised by the Probation Service.
