CSV's 'Through The Gate' Project

“Through the Gate” a unique scheme by the UK’s leading volunteering charity, CSV provides specially trained volunteer mentors to support offenders leaving custody to resettle in their community. The scheme has been proven to reduce the chance of re-offending, which has a huge impact on the future of the offender, their families and the community.

CSV, a charity that has over 30 years of experience working within the criminal justice system, recruits and trains volunteers who mentor offenders upon their return to the community. Each ‘pairing’ lasts for approximately four months; one month while the offender is still in custody and three months post-release.

The activities to settle the mentee into the community are set by their Probation Service. One of the benefits of having a mentor is that the meetings are informal; the mentors are able to have positive, trusting relationship with their mentee, whilst meeting the guidelines set by the ‘National Standard of Contact’.

CSV support the mentor and the mentee through the process, deal with any issues that arise and promptly report the progress to their Probation Service. For more information about the “Through the Gate” scheme, please phone Sarah Armstrong on 01274 737 266 or sarmstrong@csv.org.uk.
