There has been alot of talk about community sentences as alternative to custody for certain offences. Those in favour say that - if used appropriately - they will reduce the currently heavy prison costs to the taxpayer and more effectively tackle the causes of offending. Those against say they are a soft option and do not properly punish offenders.
