Torbay praised for reducing the number of children in custody

The Prison Reform Trust has congratulated Torbay Council for helping to reduce the number of children sent to custody in the Bay in 2009/10. The percentage of custodial sentences given to young people in Torbay is at a five year low. In a letter to the council the charity writes: "Torbay is to be particularly congratulated since the number of custodial sentences received by children in your area has decreased far more than the average." The Prison Reform Trust is running a programme entitled 'Out of Trouble' to try and reduce child and youth imprisonment in the UK. It believes child custody is ineffective, very expensive and should be reserved for serious violent crimes. Between 2008/9 and 2009/10 Torbay's reduction in the number of custodial sentences was one of the highest in the country at 55% - that compares with a national decrease of 24%. Torbay Council's Youth Offending Team (YOT) works closely with partner agencies to keep young people out of custody.
