What’s Your Story in Westminster
In December 2010, User Voice organised a policy discussion forum at Portcullis House, which was attended by 30 of the young people – nominated by their peers – and 25 policy makers, including MPs and representatives from the MoJ, NOMS, the London Probation Service, the Youth Justice Board and private contractors currently managing prisons.
User Voice used the Open Space method for holding meetings based on self-organisation.[1] The event focused on one central question: How can we work together to reduce youth crime?
The process was designed to encourage participation and equality of engagement and seemed appropriate in engaging young people, many of whom were not used to traditional meetings.
Feedback from participants has been very positive. In particular, the informal nature of the day, with its flexible structure resulted in many direct one-to-one discussions, with the confidence of the young people growing throughout.
