Probation guidelines rolled out

2 May 2011

A pilot project aimed at letting probation officers use their judgement instead of following instructions is be implemented across England and Wales.

Surrey and Sussex Probation Trust (SSPT) said it had been selected by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to try different working methods.

Probation officers previously followed instructions on when and how often to meet offenders, the MoJ said.

Under the new model, staff decide how to manage each case individually.

An MoJ spokesman said: "We are committed to allowing front-line staff to better use their judgement and professional skills to cut reoffending and protect the public."
